Karamea Community Radio provides a community service, a source of entertainment, education, a means of broadcasting information about local events and civil defence emergencies if required. The station offers an opportunity for local residents and visitors to Karamea to play music live on air.
Karamea Community Radio Station was established in 2004 with the co-operation, assistance and fundraising of local residents and businesses. The station was housed at Rongo Backpackers and Gallery in Waverley Street. Locals held regular weekly shows, school students learned to use the equipment and host shows and many travellers shared music from all around the world.
In July 2018 the Radio moved to The Cross, in Market Cross, Bridge Street. This is a thriving area of local business including Nature aHead Hair Salon, The Bush Lounge, Vinnie's Cafe, Shirley's Sewing Service, Property Brokers Real Estate and is right next to the local Four Square Supermarket. With more variety of music and no repetitive ads like commmercial radio, the station adds a nice touch to the vibrant atmosphere at The Cross. Situated right behind The Bush Lounge and Vinnie's Cafe, you will see a window into the world of the Radio. A door on the left will take you through to the station area if you want a better look.
While Vinnie’s Cafe is open during the daytime there is access to the station. For after hours access contact one of the Station Hosts listed below.
