In most emergencies you should be able to stay in your home. Plan to be able to look after yourself and your household for at least 7 days.

  • Create a household emergency plan
  • Work out what supplies you will need at home, in your car and at work
  • Think about how you would get through with no power, cell phone or running water

Emergencies can happen at anytime, anywhere.

Earthquake & Tsunami

For a local source tsunami, which could arrive in minutes, there won’t be time for an official warning. It is important to recognise the natural warning signs and act quickly.
If you are near a coastline and experience any of the following, take action.

Do not wait for official warnings.

  • Feel a strong earthquake that makes it hard to stand or a long earthquake that lasts more than a minute
  • See a sudden rise or fall in sea level
  • Hear loud or unusual noises from the sea

Drop, Cover and Hold during the shaking. As soon as the shaking stops, move immediately to the nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as you can.

Drop cover hold

Long or strong

Make a plan with your family/flatmates/friends to get through an emergency. Think about the things you need every day and work out what you would do if you didn’t have them.

Fill in the form then print it out, stick it on the fridge and make sure everyone knows the plan. Or save it as a PDF and email it to your family/flatmates/friends.
