When will the road be closed?
McCallams Mill Road going up to the Ōparara basin and arches will be closed on weekdays from the 1st May 2023 to public vehicle access. Honeycomb Hill cave tours are still operating on weekdays for full day tours only with Ōparara Guided Tours. The only public access option on weekdays is to join a full day cave tour.
The road will be open to public access on all weekends and public holidays, the same arrangement as in 2022. A range of guided tours including cave tours operate as normal on weekends and public holidays.
A definite reopening date has not been set but these road restrictions will be in place for at least 2 months, possibly up to November as was the case last year.

Why is the road being partially closed?
For major road widening work and upgrades from the bridge and then going up the hill.
Are cave tours operating?
Yes, cave tours are operating for full day tours only with Ōparara Guided Tours. The only public transport option on weekdays is to join a full day cave tour. This is the same arrangement as last year. Tour guides are required to carry a radio to communicate with the road contractor to negotiate times for access. These are major works and it is not practical at this stage to have other public access during this time.
