Hi everyone!
It has been a month since the last newsletter and KSM has been successful in producing and collaborating in two very special events. The night at the Village Hotel was wonderful and not to single out anyone, but it was a great pleasure to see Cody Wilkinson unleash his dubstep madness - awesome mate! The other event was the collaboration with KAS in producing the TOSI Sport Tournament Party which was a massive success. Personally, I am very proud of our youth and in particular Tjalve Mollison - it warmed my heart to see you 'unleaching' the sound machine, and while I know you were nervous your set was (have I got this right?) 'The Bomb!'. But more on both these events later...
Primarily this newsletter is about providing you all with updates on:
1. Winter Solstice
2. The Road to Winter Solstice
3. Community Cinema
But first, if any of you are in any doubt about whether what we are doing is going in the right direction I hope this email I recieved alleviates any concerns -
Hey, im jesse a keen fan of KSM and everything you guys do been to many gigs as a friend and i have been praticing djing for a while now. I was e-mailing to ask about any upcoming gigs that yous guys gunna be doing, any way that i could posibly get a chance to do a set sometime, like at the next solstice etc? i was having a talk to gary about it at the last gig yous did at the village hotel. also if ever need a hand advertising from the westport side of things just contact me, always keen to help. yous guys rock!!
nice...
Winter Solstice - Unfortunately I have had to re-submit our funding application to the Buller District Arts Council. While the time delay is unfortunate I have attempted to do as much preparation as possible before we find out whether we get the money we need. The arts council committee is meeting either today or tomorrow so we should have a clear indication soon. Kathy Ramsey has several bands lined up for us. Raramai, Becky, Rose and I have been working on the look of the poster (and probably the website). The vision and plan has been put out to you guys for comment and I have begun planning the details of our proposal to DOC, marketing and the roles of the key people involved in the event.
A big thank you needs to go out to Rose for her support in getting what is in my head out onto paper and her support when I have needed to spend large amounts of time in front of the computer 'getting stuff done'. Also thanks to Anne for letting us use one half of her 'big shed' - this space will be utilised to store stuff and hold workshops and working bees as we prepare for the festival. I have had an overwhelming amount of interest in the Winter Solstice and offers of help with spreading the word - if we get the funding it is shaping up to be a doozie!
The Road to Winter Solstice - In the previous newsletter I mentioned I was in negotiation with the new proprietors of the Bush Lounge around having a fundraiser for the Solstice. Unfortunately that situation has changed (my heart goes out to you guys...) and we need to create another opportunity to let our crew strut their stuff and to generate some funding for the main event. Currently my idea is a buffet meal with entertainment and we could provide (to a point) beer and wine all included in the price of the ticket.
The main hurdle is finding a venue... has anyone got any ideas?
Community Cinema - Thank you to Barry Charmers, Sina and Seth for the donation of couches and chairs, and Shona, Anne and Kaia for the donation of material for the proposed cinema. I will be in contact with the owner of the dairy factory to confirm the conditions of use and hope either this weekend or next to have a working bee to clean up the space - this will not take long, the biggest job is waterblasting the space - but it would be awesome if you could help if you can : )
I will keep you informed!
While this will appear in the next issue of the Canary (the KAS newsletter) I want to personally thank all of you who helped Brett, Tjalve and myself with producing the TOSI Sports Tournament Party - your efforts contributed to making an event that has received very high praise. Congrates to Raramai, Brett, Cody and Pete for putting on a great show @ the Village Hotel. Finally, please find attached a photo of the lastest addition to KSM - nice one Kaia these will be great at our events! Photos of the party A KAS can be found here:

Well that is it for this addition - expect to hear from me soon with results of the funding application and when the working bee for the cinema can happen. As always if you have something you wish to have included in the newsletter please drop me a line.
ps. If you haven't already been contacted - Shona has organised a potluck for the crew at her home this Friday... see you there!
