KARAMEA SOUND MACHINE
Newsletter - March 2011
Hi Everyone! It has been a while since the last newsletter, however that does not reflect a lack of activity for KSM! In this newsletter:
1. Development of a new logo.
2. KSM collaborates with KAS in producing an end of sports tournament party.
3. Indoor option for communty movies.
4. Winter Solstice update.
5. Events leading up to Winter Solstice.
6. KSM in negotiation with local drama group over upcoming production.
7. And other bits and pieces...
Development of a new logo: Raramai has been busy creating logo options for KSM, examples of which are attached to this newsletter. Raramai has been playing with the ideas of speaker drivers and soundwaves, the moon (a reflection of the outdoor nature of KSM's activities), the colours of Karamea and the logo working both as a projection and on a business card. Excited, it is now time for you to provide Raramai (raramaiparadise [dot] net [dot] nz) with feedback as we wish to launch the marketing of Winter Solstice with this new look. Thanks Raramai for your time and creative energy!
KSM collaborates with KAS in producing an end of sports tournament party: Can you help? Tjalve (tjalvdoghotmail [dot] com), Brett (obewangenxgmail [dot] com) and myself have developed a concept plan for this exciting event and are looking for support from the community to set up. The event is happening on Thursday 14th of April and we are looking for help with setting up the dj space, soundsystem, lighting and projections on the Wednesday night and setting up the rest of the space on Thursday afternoon (remembering all of the teachers and students will be active in the tournament). Also, we are looking for couches, coffee tables, lamps and large pieces of material to borrow for the night. If you have 'stuff' or are interested in helping create this special event for our communities youth please contact one of us!
Indoor option for communtiy movies: On the off change I approached the new owner of the dairy factory about using the old coolstore as a cinema - to my delight KSM now has permission to utilise this space. It needs a clean up, some stuff moved out, a panel replaced and the floor waterblasted, but in essence it is a very use-able space. The acquisition and donation of rugs, pallets, comfortable seating, posters, lighting and some dark drapes will result in the creation of a special space. I will be contacting the NZ Film Commission about funding and films. If you are interested in working towards making this happen please contact me... the possibilities are exciting!
Winter Solstice update: WATCH THIS SPACE! Funding applications are being lodged and a vision document created. I was hoping to include some documentation with this newsletter however I took up an offer of support in structuring the document... expect something later in the week!
Events leading up to Winter Solstice: I have begun planning a series of live events that will allow local talent associated with KSM to 'strut their stuff' beginning the 9th April with our local dj's playing at the Karamea Village Hotel. This is a great opportunity for all who wish to support KSM and polish their craft to get some practice in front of a live audience and raise the profile of KSM leading up to Winter Solstice. Negotiations have began around a fundraiser for Winter Solstice to be held at the Bush lounge (sometime late April/ early May) and there is a call for us to do an event in Westport (late May/ early June would be good timing leading up to the Solstice). If you are interested in being a part of these events please drop me a line!
KSM in negotiation with local drama group over upcoming production: Joy McNabb has approached KSM about being involved in an upcoming theatre restaurant fundraiser (you may have seen her advertising for people to be involved). It is envisioned if KSM gets involved we will provide soundscapes and projected visual support, as well as creative input to the event. If you are interested in being involved contact either Joy or myself – this could be a great opportunity to connect with aspects of the community we normally wouldn't...
Bits and pieces: I would like to give a heart felt thank you to Diana Storer for making a donation to KSM after the success of the 'Orchestra of Spheres' evening – nice one! KSM now has enough money to purchase a new amplifier to power the new sub speakers at their potential – this increased bottom end will have its first outing at the Karamea Village Tavern – thank you also to everyone who helped with the outdoor movie nights over the summer (especially you Pete ; ))!
Well that is it for this edition. I look forward to hearing from you. If you have anything you would like to include in the next edition of this newsletter please contact me – I would be happy to include.
Cheers Gary Smith
