Welcome to probably the last newsletter for 2011. In this issue of the Newsletter:
Karamea Community Theatre: Grand Opening and a world of opportunity!
New Years Celebrations in Karamea: Do you want to make something happen?
Contact with local establishments: Promoting local talent over the summer.
February Festival: Something to really get excited about!
Community events over the summer: Any ideas?
Karamea Community Theatre: Firstly a huge thank you to all of you who helped pull it all together and donated pizza for the grand opening is well over due. The space is looking, sounding and feeling great! While there is a minor issue with the sound of water (as those attending the 'La Jette' screening experienced!) and heaps of potential for adding that Karamea flavour to the space, we now have our own community theatre! As you will be aware there is a screening this Wednesday (14th December) evening, but beyond that I have nothing planned. Gato has approached me about screening some of his short films which I hope we will be able to do before christmas. If you are interested in making something happen in this space please drop me a line: ideas so far - acoustic music, poetry events, plays and of course movies. Also the space would serve well as a relaxed conference space for community presentations. While we have enough furniture (although some coffee tables wouldn't go a miss) I am keen to hear from anyone who would like to produce or hang their artwork on the walls - also I am keen to hear of any ideas for services we could provide during or after screenings (food, beveridges, social/discussion time). Finally, I am dead keen on doing events for children and the youth in the community through the summer holidays - I am hoping to combine games and activities with a movie so if you have any ideas and are keen to make something happen drop me a line.
New Years Celebrations in Karamea: A couple of us are keen to do something locally this New Years - last year @ the Oparara Reserve was a great time for all the family - so what do you think? Do you want to do a similar thing this year? Please contact me ASAP so we will have time to make arrangements.
Contact with local establishments: A couple of weeks ago I sent out a brochure to local establishments outlining Karamea Sound Machine, profiling our local djs and inviting collaborations over the summer months. All of the communities dj's are excited at the prospect of performing (hopefully on a regular basis) locally, so if you want to help see this happen drop a word in a local publicians ear.. it can do nothing but help!
February Festival: On the weekend of the 17th to the 19th February 2012, Karamea Sound Machine and Organik_Audio are collaborating in bringing some major talent to Karamea for three days of great music and celebration for the whole community! Harry (Organikismness) and myself having been in discussion since the Winter Solstice Festival and this week have all but confirmed an awesome lineup: Soulware, Tom Cosm, Organikismness, Tweq, Civil Dinn and Badred with more to be confirmed... Please find attached a draft copy of the flyer developed by Harry.
I am dead keen on creating an event that celebrates the uniqueness of Karamea as I expect we will get a lot of visitors to the area following the festival trail (this event is two weeks after Luminate and one week after Alien Nation) and provide fun activities for the whole family. With our community djs, musicians and the odd talented person we are likely to pick up during the marketing of the event there will be a great diversity of music throughout the event. I am looking for people to help out with the setup (this will not need to be the major undertaking Winter Solstice is) but most importantly create fun events for the whole family - for example: face painting, treasure hunts and creative activities. If you are keen to help out please drop me a line ASAP so I can include any costs or special requirements into the budget and plan.
Finally, if you are interested in helping out with organising please drop me a line - I can always do with a helping hand and it is most rewarding being an active part of putting on an event!
Community events over the summer: Does anyine have any ideas about what we could do to create community, provide fun for the family as a whole and celebrate summer in Karamea? Experimental jam? Quiz Night? Beach Party? Drop me a line, KSM now has some very useful assets (and very talented people), lets utilise them!
Well we are almost at the end of 2011. I have found this year both challenging and rewarding. I have had the immense privilege of collaborating with many beautiful and talented people, from supporting the youth to attend or produce events to remembering a lost soul, Winter Solstice Festival and Community performances to currently providing a dj and vj workshop in Westport over the summer. Karamea Sound Machine itself has under gone a kind of maturation. The novelty has worn off and peoples perceptions have taken hold, the people who make up KSM have obtained a high level of proficiency and while we still have a lot to learn and explore KSM has began to develop an identity. I wish to personally thank everyone of you who have worked beside and supported me and my crazy ideas, it is because of you that KSM exists. Thank you...
Well that is all for now - please get in touch if you can help out with anything. Also as always I am keen to include others contributions to this newsletter so if you have done anything you want to share or want to communicate with the crew - drop me a line and I will include it in the next issue!
