Welcome to another edition of the KSM Newsletter. Firstly, a huge thank you to Alana for letting us hang at her place the other weekend and Flow In for coming all the way from Hokitika to share her talents. It was a lovely event and while some faces were missed, it was lovely to see you all. I have recieved lots of comment on how good all the communities dj's have become - well done guys all that hard work (yeah right!) is really showing!
In this edition:
Community Theatre - working bee results and grand opening.
Organikismness @ Lyric Theatre
Events over the summer - lists of possibilities and a request for expressions of interest in making things happen.
Request from Community Youth
Community Theatre: Thank you to everyone who turned up to help whether it was for 30 minutes or three hours your efforts are greatly appreciated. We managed to clean up the water and create a sandbag wall to keep the water out (which incidentally is working great), lay carpet, place furniture, string up wire for sound control in roof area, black out front wall and put the screen in place! Over the last couple of days I have placed the sound gear and done a sound test - the carpet and furniture have made a huge difference to the acoustics! I have chosen the 6th November for the 'Grand Opening' (see the Chronicle Article attached for details) and was hoping to have a working bee from 10am on this day to help do some more blacking out, build a serving counter, hang art work, collect and placing the last of the furniture, place signage and other minor preparations. If you are available please drop me a line otherwise I will need to spend time during the work making it happen... also, is anyone able to make and donate pizza for the evening session? and is anyone able to help out with staffing at either or both sessions?
Organikismness @ Lyric Theatre: 11th November from 8pm, this promises to be a huge night of awesomeness! the crew are working hard to create an engaging space and Harry Organikismness always brings the goods! also come support our local dj's: Ra, Tjalve, Cody and myself will be performing sets along with Civil Dinn (Nelson) and DJ Grynd (Westport). Check out the facebook page over the next few days for more details of the event.
Events over the summer: KSM will be approaching several establishments in the community about hosting of events over the 'season' as well the usual outdoor events. Ideas so far include: themed dj music nights (good music, company and dancing), quiz night and an experimental jam. It is hoped all funds raised from these events can be used to buy a little bit of equipment needed to assist with providing a quality live sound, support of the communities youth and seeding money for the Winter Solstice Festival. Also we have the Soulware crew interested in doing an event as well as dj's from Invercargil and Christchurch keen to come and share their tunes! So what do you think? Have you got ideas for the season? Are you keen to be involved?
Incidentally, I have been in discussion with Buller REAP on the running of a 10 week course for youth and young adults on dj and vj skills to be run over the summer holidays in Westport. The course will end with an Event @ the NBS Theatre where the course participants will perform along with guest dj's. I hope to also run the course compressed into a weekend here in Karamea over the holidays. If you would like to help or are keen to run music and art workshops along side this event please get in touch with me - sharing skills with the youth is very rewarding for both parties...
Request from Community Youth: while I am on the subject of youth. I have been asked by several young people in the community if it was possible for them to get together with the musicians in the community and have a day of jamming. Immediately I thought of the Experimental Jam model and maybe this is an opportunity to do number three... If you are keen to be a part of whatever is created to meet this request please drop me a line... it is likely this will happen early in the new year.
Chronicle Article: please find attached an article I have placed in this weeks chronicle and placed in the community website forum section. I decided it was time to re- introduce our activity to the community in the hope that now we have firmly established ourselves an open invitation to be involved might breakdown some of those conceptual barriers that curse us all : ) What I didn't have room to say in the article was a heart felt thank you to all of you who have in some way supported me and KSM to do all the magical things we have done in the last two and a half years. The future is bright and I look forward to growing together where ever it takes us....
As usual, I appreciate all comment on the content of this newsletter. If anyone has anything they would like to have included in the next issue please drop me a line - I would be more than happy to include it! Look forward to seeing you all at the theatre opening and/or the Organikismness gig next month.
