The WCRC is running some drop-in consultation meetings around the West Coast to discuss the new reegion-wide district plan which central government has required it to do. The planners have provided an opportunity for the Karamea community to call in and express their views.
What is it? Te Tai o Poutini Plan will be the new District Plan for the Westland, Grey and Buller District Councils. It will replace the three current plans and set out how resources will be managed across the districts. The District Plan is Council’s planning rulebook for building and development. Through the District Plan we can:
Decide where future development is located
Determine how our communities plan for natural hazards like floods and earthquakes
Develop the kind of community we want to leave our children
What’s in the Plan? The Plan is being prepared under the Resource Management Act and will include information on: • Managing natural hazards; where should we avoid development when the hazard becomes too great to live with? • Protecting our important biodiversity; identifying the most important areas, and the less important areas where development is appropriate • Managing growth, including where new areas for residential, industrial and commercial activities can occur, and the subdivision rules around these • Protecting cultural sites and how Poutini Ngāi Tahu values will influence the built form of the West Coast • Protecting heritage values while allowing for the reuse of heritage sites • Managing important landscapes so that these values are maintained.
