Come and eat with us!
On Sunday 11th April 2021, the scent of local lamb roasting on a spit will waft through Market Cross, as bowls of home-grown salad, squash, spuds and sweets jostle for space on the banquet table. Local bards and minstrels join the scents with their songs, filling the air as children play and neighbours compare the season past.
Anybody who has been here for any length of time knows that Karamea holds an abundance of bountiful backyards, keen green fingers crafting food from soil with the support of our unique subtropical climate. There is a huge depth of knowledge about growing food, and, perhaps even more so, a wealth of talent and passion for turning those raw ingredients into exceptional dishes. From every over-stuffed potluck or private dinner, to the local cheese evening, to bottles of homebrew popping at parties, Karameans show we know how to enjoy what we create here.
In this spirit, we invite you to join us on the aforementioned Sunday evening, from 5-8pm, to celebrate and bring that vision to reality. Or... whatever you bring to the table! Art, performance, craft, whatever gifts or skills you want to celebrate and share.
We will provide the lamb, and for the potluck we encourage you to bring something homegrown or homemade, as our primary intention is to highlight the food we grow and make here and encourage local food security by sharing inspiration. However, even if you don’t have food to share please come and share your company with us! We ask for a donation of $5 on the door if you bring a dish, or $10 if you don’t, and kids under 15 are free. All proceeds will go to the new Community Garden as seed funding.
Throughout history, humans have gathered together to celebrate harvest as a community and everyone was included. To continue this tradition, we are offering a home delivery for those who are less mobile. If you would like to have a meals-on-wheels type delivery, please get in touch with Sacha on 0204 149 1184. And if you would like to be part of supporting that, rather than bring a dish on the night, we are asking for donations of local produce/eggs/milk etc which we will collect from the Karamea RSA between 3-5pm on Friday 9th April, then craft into delicious meals to deliver over the weekend.
