The Heaphy Track has long been recognized as one of the great walks in New Zealand. The opportunity to bike through this spectacular part of our country linking Golden Bay and Karamea will mean thousands more people will now get to enjoy the experience previously only accessible to trampers. This access comes at a time of growing interest in biking and the need to develop new activities in the competitive international tourism industry.
Mountain biking the Heaphy will become one of the ‘must do’ activities for active visitors to New Zealand and boost the West Coast tourism industry. I am sure the excellent facilities and management by the Department of Conservation will be respected and appreciated by the new wave of mountain bikers who will now be drawn to a West Coast adventure.
I am planning my trip already!!!
